The Fifth Lineage Throne Holder: Lhatse Khyentse Odzer


Lhatse Khyentse Odzer was born as the son of the nobility family Lhatse Gyang-ra. Since young he demonstrated faith towards the Three Jewels, and full of renunciation and compassion. His deeds were pure and perfectly learned all the teachings of sutra and tantra in Lhatse Monastery. He always entered into meditation in the state of Great Perfection, peacefully concentrated and attained the four visions of Dzogchen. He transmitted the Guhyagarbha Tantra and other karma (oral transmission) and terma (hidden treasure) teachings to ripen the capacity and mind of the disciples. Especially he established the retreat centre in Lhatse Monastery, and taught the thirteen disciples in the retreat centre, and all of them attained the rainbow body. At that time, there were three thousands monks at Lhatse Monastery.

Among his disciples, besides the thirteen rainbow body attainers, there were Lhatse Gyangkhang, Sanggye Palden, and others who also attained perfect accomplishment. Due to the set up of individual retreat centre, since then Lhatse Monastery began the system of three years three months three days retreat. At the age of eighty-four, he manifested parinirvana.
